IntroductionBisphenol A is highly debated and studied in relation to a variety of health outcomes. This large variation in the literature makes BPA a topic that is prone to selective use of literature, in order to underpin one’s own findings and opinion. Over time, selective use of literature, by means of citations, can lead to a skewed knowledge development and a biased scientific consensus. In this study, we assess which factors drive citation and whether this results in the overrepresentation of (...) harmful health effects of BPA.MethodsA citation network analysis was performed to test various determinants of citation. A systematic search identified all relevant publications on the human health effect of BPA. Data were extracted on potential determinants of selective citation, such as study outcome, study design, sample size, journal impact factor, authority of the author, self-citation, and funding source. We applied random effect logistic regression to assess whether these determinants influence the likelihood of citation.ResultsOne hundred sixty-nine publications on BPA were identified, with 12,432 potential citation pathways of which 808 citations occurred. The network consisted of 63 cross-sectional studies, 34 cohort studies, 29 case-control studies, 35 narrative reviews, and 8 systematic reviews. Positive studies have a 1.5 times greater chance of being cited compared to negative studies. Additionally, the authority of the author and self-citation are consistently found to be positively associated with the likelihood of being cited. Overall, the network seems to be highly influenced by two highly cited publications, whereas 60 out of 169 publications received no citations.ConclusionIn the literature on BPA, citation is mostly driven by positive study outcome and author-related factors, such as high authority within the network. Interpreting the impact of these factors and the big influence of a few highly cited publications, it can be questioned to which extent the knowledge development in human literature on BPA is actually evidence-based. Multiple measures of decision-making under uncertainty (e.g. jumping to conclusions (JTC), bias against disconfirmatory evidence (BADE), win-switch behavior, random exploration) have been associated with delusional thinking in independent studies. Yet, it is unknown whether these variables explain shared or unique variance in delusional thinking, and whether these relationships are specific to paranoia or delusional ideation more broadly. Additionally, the underlying computational mechanisms require further investigation. To investigate these questions, task and self-report data were collected in 88 individuals (46 healthy controls, (...) 42 schizophrenia-spectrum) and included measures of cognitive biases and behavior on probabilistic reversal learning and explore/exploit tasks. Of those, only win-switch rate significantly differed between groups. In regression, reversal learning performance, random exploration, and poor evidence integration during BADE showed significant, independent associations with paranoia. Only self-reported JTC was associated with delusional ideation, controlling for paranoia. Computational parameters increased the proportion of variance explained in paranoia. Overall, decision-making influenced by strong volatility and variability is specifically associated with paranoia, whereas self-reported hasty decision-making is specifically associated with other themes of delusional ideation. These aspects of decision-making under uncertainty may therefore represent distinct cognitive processes that, together, have the potential to worsen delusional thinking across the psychosis spectrum. This volume is published concurrently with the one reviewed below and together they unite a number of Quine's previously scattered papers into two compact volumes; this volume deals with his more philosophical work while the other is concerned with more purely technical logical studies. The twenty-one essays cover the period 1934-1964 and none have appeared between hard covers before. Several of the articles—"The ways of paradox," "Foundations of mathematics," "On the application of modern logic," and "Necessary truth"—are essentially popular expositions. (...) The others are generally more restricted in both scope and appeal, and deal with the ontology of the sentential calculus, truth by convention, implicit definition, modal logic, and ontological reduction in the sciences. Several articles concern the philosophy of science directly: "On simple theories of a complex world," "Posits and reality," and "The scope and language of science." This fine collection will be of significant help in presenting the work of a distinguished philosopher to a wider audience, as well as providing the professional with a source of discussion.—P. J. M. A gas in a box is perhaps the most important model system studied in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Usually, studies focus on the gas, whereas the box merely serves as an idealized confinement. The present article focuses on the box as the central object and develops a thermodynamic theory by treating the geometric degrees of freedom of the box as the degrees of freedom of a thermodynamic system. Applying standard mathematical methods to the thermody- namics of an empty box allows (...) equations with the same structure as those of cosmology and classical and quantum mechanics to be derived. The simple model system of an empty box is shown to have interesting connections to classical mechanics, special relativity, and quantum field theory. (shrink)

Background Regarding controversial medical services, many have argued that if physicians cannot in good conscience provide a legal medical intervention for which a patient is a candidate, they should refer the requesting patient to an accommodating provider. This study examines what US physicians think a doctor is obligated to do when the doctor thinks it would be immoral to provide a referral. Method The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey of a random sample of 2000 US physicians from all specialties. The (...) primary criterion variable was agreement that physicians have a professional obligation to refer patients for all legal medical services for which the patients are candidates, even if the physician believes that such a referral is immoral. Results Of 1895 eligible physicians, 1032 (55%) responded. 57% of physicians agreed that doctors must refer patients regardless of whether or not the doctor believes the referral itself is immoral. Holding this opinion was independently associated with being more theologically pluralistic, describing oneself as sociopolitically liberal, and indicating that respect for patient autonomy is the most important bioethical principle in one's practice (multivariable ORs, 1.6–2.4). Conclusions Physicians are divided about a professional obligation to refer when the physician believes that referral itself is immoral. These data suggest there is no uncontroversial way to resolve conflicts posed when patients request interventions that their physicians cannot in good conscience provide. (shrink)

This collection of twenty-three papers from the period 1934-1960 is concerned with formal number theory and syntax, axiomatic set theory, truth functions, and quantification theory. In the first group appear "Concatenation as a basis for arithmetic" and "Definition of substitution," among others; the second includes "Set-theoretic foundations for logic," "On ω-inconsistency," and "Element and number." Quine's important articles "Completeness of the propositional calculus" and "Cores and prime implicants of truth functions" are in the third section; the last one includes "A (...) proof procedure for quantification theory" and "Church's theorem on the decision problem". These are but a few of many important articles. All the articles have been reset in a new, perspicuous type-face which makes study easier. Several important papers which were omitted should, in the reviewer's opinion, have been included, but this is a minor quibble. Quine's stature in modern logic can be gauged by examining these papers.—P. J. M. (shrink)

David Lewis modified his original theory of causation in response to the problem of ‘late preemption’ (see 1973b; 1986b: 193-212). However, as we will see, there is a crucial difference between genuine and preempted causes that Lewis must appeal to if his solution is to work. We argue that once this difference is recognized, an altogether better solution to the preemption problem presents itself.

This book originally appeared in 1920 under the title Relativitätstheorie und Erkenntnis Apriori and was the first of Reichenbach's numerous writings on the philosophical problems of relativity theory, space, and time. In this book the author attempted to show how Kant's theory of the a priori, especially concerning the concept of the a priori as "constituting the concept of [the] object" in question, comes into irrevocable conflict with certain facts of both the General and Special theories of relativity; and that, (...) therefore, we must amend Kant's treatment of the role of the a priori in knowledge accordingly. The translator, Maria Reichenbach, has provided a long and useful introduction, placing the work in the context of Reichenbach's philosophical career and activities, and providing background material on the author himself. For this volume Professor Davis has assembled a number of the most important papers on undecidable propositions, unsolvable problems and computable functions. Several papers appear here in print for the first time: Gödel's remarks at the Princeton Bicentennial Conference on Problems in Mathematics, and Post's paper on Absolutely Unsolvable Problems. Other authors whose work is included are Church, Turing, Rosser, and Kleene. Gödel's classic "On Formally Undecidable Propositions..." appears in a new translation, and all papers have been corrected, many such (...) corrections provided by the original authors. The editor has contributed brief notes preceding each paper, these notes are intended to clarify and otherwise expatiate upon the contents of those articles. Hitherto unavailable except in the original French, Bergson's Durée et Simultanéité is an engaging contribution to the philosophy of relativity theory, space, and time. The book appeared during a period of great debate on the philosophical status of Einstein's Special Theory, and it treats, therefore, of it to the exclusion of the more conceptually difficult General Theory. Bergson is mainly concerned with trying to explicate the problems of the twin and clock 'paradoxes' which are presently again under some critical discussion. (...) Bergson tries to show that there is a symmetry in the aging of the two twins, not the usual asymmetry. Although Bergson is not usually considered a philosopher of science, those interested in the conceptual foundations of a modern physical theory might do well to consider his refreshing conclusions. This short monograph is a formulation and study of a system of first-order predicate logic of terms with a Hibert-Bernays selection-symbol E. The author proceeds through the primitive notation to recursive definitions of terms, relates the usual predicate calculi to this logic of terms, discusses an appropriate theory of models for the system, and finally proves it complete. This collection of seven papers by six authors centers about the relation of free action to determinism as both a metaphysical as well as a methodological hypothesis. Chisholm is concerned with the problem of whether a human whose behavior is completely controlled by outside forces can still be considered free; Danto studies the old problem of whether it can be said that actions of men are caused in the same way as the activities of other objects. Richard Taylor examines the (...) problem of free will in light of the apparent asymmetry of the prevention and the postvention—the doing of an act not ruled out by antecedent conditions—of events; Ginet develops a notion of "contingent necessitation" and proceeds to show that humans do not have a choice as to whether their actions satisfy certain conditions, these conditions following by contingent necessity from events not themselves in an individual's control. Wilfrid Sellars contributes two papers; the first is a study of the locution of "intending that," desiring and willing, intending, believing, the condition of being disposed to, and the practical syllogism; the second paper continues the tenor of the first—Sellars formalizes the notions of various kinds of "necessary" states of affairs, and uses this to make a distinction between being able to will and being able to do an act. The editor has the last paper which concerns the matter of whether there can be an empirical disproof of determinism.—P. J. M. (shrink)

This book is an attempt to relate the operative and constructive formulation of symbolic logic carried out by Lorenzen—and to a lesser degree Kolmogorov and Markov—to both Wittgenstein's philosophy of logic as set forth in the Tractatus and later modified in the Investigations, and to Brouwer's critique of classical logic, especially the principles of excluded middle. The first chapter contains an exposition of Wittgenstein's critical analysis of the "mythical" views of Russell and Frege; and it develops his own "operative" theory (...) of elementary logic. The second chapter concerns the relations of the theories of Brouwer and Wittgenstein; the last section is a detailed survey of chiefly Lorenzen's operative logic in which the presentation of a dialogue-like interpretation of logic is exhaustively analyzed: the notion of a "winning strategy" in such a two-person dialogue is set forth, the technique is extended to classical logic from its original, weaker operational form, and its relations to Gentzen's Sequenzen-kalkül is discussed.
